Understanding Our Feelings

Conversation Cues

Talking with children about books and media is a great way to start a discussion about the kinds of support they may need. Here are some questions that can help families relate to stories in a meaningful way:

  • How do you think [character] feels about the situation?  Do you think you would feel the same way?
  • What do you think would have made the story better?
  • If [character] was a friend of yours, what would you tell them?
  • When you feel the way [character] does, what would make you feel better?
  • If you could re-write this story, what would you change?
